Do these first

The truck is not storage. This decision has to be made while the driver is still there.

  • Get the actual reason — in the receiver’s words, not a summary.
  • Find out how much was refused — all of it, or part.
  • Identify who can authorize the next move — that is usually not the driver and not the receiver.
  • Document any damage or shortage now — before the freight moves again.
  • Tell me while the truck is still there — options narrow the moment it leaves.

The next-hour decision

A single stretch-wrapped pallet standing alone on a dock apron, separated from a forklift and workers loading a trailer in the background.
Freight that has been set aside is not stored freight. It is waiting on somebody with authority to choose where it goes next.

The truck is an operating asset, not storage. Someone with authority needs to choose a path: return, hold, reconsign, redeliver or accept only part if all parties agree.

Each option can create additional transportation, storage, waiting or handling charges. See accessorial charges.

Four paths, and someone has to pick one

  1. RedeliverThe receiver will take it, but not now. A new appointment, and the truck has to be available for it.
  2. HoldThe freight stays somewhere while it is sorted out. Storage starts.
  3. ReconsignIt goes to a different consignee or address. A new movement, with new charges.
  4. ReturnBack to origin. The longest and usually the most expensive.

Do not improvise a destination

The driver should not decide on their own where rejected freight goes. Get direction through the appropriate shipper, broker, carrier and consignee channels.

Freight being refused right now?

Send the refusal reason, location, driver status and who can authorize the next move so we can make a decision while the truck is still available.
