The short answer

Use spot when you need current market capacity for a specific shipment. Use contract pricing when you have repeatable freight and enough volume and consistency for carriers to commit to an ongoing rate structure.

Spot pricing

Spot rates respond quickly to truck availability, lane demand, equipment shortages, holidays, seasonal surges, weather and recovery freight.

DAT reported that dry-van spot rates moved above contract rates in June 2026 for the first time since February 2022. ACT reported aggregate spot rates still above contract rates in July 2026.

Contract pricing

Contract rates come from an ongoing agreement or bid structure for expected freight.

The value is planning consistency. The trade-off is that the contracted rate is based on an assumed freight pattern and service level.

ACT notes that contract pricing historically followed spot changes with a lag, although shorter agreements and mini-bids have shortened that lag in the current cycle.

What spot gives you

  • Current market price — Useful when freight is irregular or infrequent.
  • Fast lane feedback — Pricing reacts to today's truck supply.
  • Flexibility — You are not tied to one carrier award.

What spot does not give you

  • Long-term price stability — A future load may cost more or less.
  • Guaranteed future capacity — Today's truck supply is not next month's supply.
  • A universal market price — Each shipment still has its own details.

When contract usually fits better

Contract is more useful when lanes repeat, volume is predictable, pickup and delivery requirements are stable, and equipment is consistent.

When spot usually fits better

Spot is more useful when freight is irregular, lanes change often, a contract carrier rejects the load, or a recovery truck is needed.
