The short answer
Notification is a communication requirement. Appointment required is a scheduling requirement. They are not the same commitment.
Do these first
Ask the receiver what it actually requires.
- Only a call? — request notification.
- A reserved time? — request an appointment.
- Valid contact — wrong contact data can stop scheduling.
Notification before delivery
XPO publishes Notification Prior to Delivery as a distinct service. TForce Freight's tariff groups appointment and notification under one item but distinguishes calling for a delivery appointment from other arrival notifications.
Why an unnecessary appointment can slow freight
A shipment at the destination terminal may wait while the receiver and carrier agree on a slot. If the receiver only needs a call ahead, a formal appointment can add an unnecessary scheduling step.
