The short answer
Measure the completed shipping unit at its greatest outside length, width and height. If the product, wrap, corner boards, crate or hardware sticks out, that projection is part of the shipping dimension.
Do these first
Measure the freight after packaging is complete.
- Measure length at the longest point — not the nominal pallet length.
- Measure width at the widest point — include overhang and protection.
- Measure height at the highest point — include crate tops, caps and protrusions.
- Measure each different handling unit — do not average mixed pallets.
Pallet footprint is not always freight footprint
A standard pallet can still produce a larger handling unit.
Examples:
- Cartons overhang the deck boards.
- Corner boards bow outward under wrap.
- Product extends past one side.
- Banding hardware projects beyond the load.
- The stack leans.
NMFTA's density guidance uses the greatest straight-line dimensions of the handling unit as tendered, including projections.
That is the measurement standard this page follows.
Overhang
Overhang matters twice.
First, it increases the actual freight dimension.
Second, it can increase damage exposure because the product is no longer fully supported by the pallet.
Measure the overhang. Then decide whether the packaging should be corrected before shipment.
Use build a pallet that survives for the packaging decision.
Height
Measure from the lowest pallet or crate surface to the highest point of the finished unit.
Include:
- Cartons
- Corner boards
- Crate structure
- Protective caps
- Machinery projections
- Anything that remains attached during transport
Irregular freight
For machinery or odd-shaped pieces, measure the smallest rectangular box that would fully contain the freight.
That means:
- Longest point to longest point
- Widest point to widest point
- Lowest base to highest projection
The carrier needs the transport envelope, not the manufacturer's nominal equipment size.
Crated freight
Measure the outside of the finished crate.
Do not use the product dimension inside the crate.
The crate can add meaningful width, height and weight.
Multiple pallets
Measure unlike pallets individually.
A shipment with one 48 × 40 pallet and one oversized handling unit should not be entered as two standard pallets.
What this changes
- Better trailer planning — The pallet-capacity tool starts with the right dimensions.
- Better LTL rating inputs — Density and inspection records are easier to compare.
- Better equipment selection — Oversize and irregular freight is identified earlier.
What it will not change
- Carrier tariff rules — Correct dimensions do not override carrier rating terms.
- Actual freight class — Density is only one classification input.
- Legal equipment limits — Large dimensions may still require different equipment or permits.
