The short answer

Your rate rises when the shipment needs a smaller carrier pool, more truck time, more repositioning or more operating constraints.

Check your equipment

Does the load need reefer, flatbed, step deck, liftgate, specialized loading, tarping or team service?

More specialized requirements generally mean fewer trucks can perform the load.

Check your lane

Is the destination far from strong reload freight, remote from major truck supply or difficult for the equipment type you need?

Use headhaul vs backhaul and deadhead.

Check your timing

Is the load picking up today, near a holiday, in a seasonal surge or locked to one short appointment window?

Use why last-minute freight costs more.

Check your freight dimensions and weight

Truckload is not normally rated by density the way LTL is, but weight and dimensions still determine what equipment works, whether the load is legal, and whether special open-deck or permit planning is needed.

Use:

Check pickup and delivery access

Do you need residential delivery, limited-access service, liftgate, job-site delivery, inside delivery or appointment service?

Each changes the work required.

Check whether you changed the shipment after the quote

The quote may no longer describe the same load if pallet count, weight, dimensions, pickup date, destination, equipment, stop count or delivery requirement changed.

Diagnose the rate with the shipment facts.

  • Check the equipment — Is it more specialized than a standard van?
  • Check the lane — Is the destination a weak reload market?
  • Check the timing — Did urgency narrow the truck pool?
  • Check access — Are there services the carrier has to perform?
  • Check dimensions and weight — Does the freight force another equipment or loading plan?
