The CDOT permitting page advises only: 'Submit applications in a timely manner to ensure issuance of the permit prior to the movement of the vehicle or load.'
Chapter 6 Special and Super Load permits requiring a highway closure only. This is a public-notice period, not an application processing time. - A Chapter 6 Special or Super Load permit is required for an extra-legal vehicle or load that the Department determines requires extraordinary action or exceeds the Maximum Limits (annual permit maxima: 16 ft high, 17 ft wide, 130/120/110 ft long by road class, 200,000 lb GVW). CDOT's permitting page states the bands as: Chapter 6 Special for gross vehicle weight between 200,000 and 500,000 pounds, fee $250; Superload where gross vehicle weight exceeds 500,000 pounds, or the vehicle has a double dolly and is greater than 15 feet wide, fee $800. On a State Highway designated red on the Pilot Escort and Oversize Restriction Map, anything over 8 ft 6 in wide needs a Chapter 6 Special.
The rule defines the trigger qualitatively and by the annual Maximum Limits; the numeric weight bands (200,000-500,000 lb and over 500,000 lb) come from CDOT's own permitting page, not from 2 CCR 601-4. Rule 300.10 defines Super Load only by reference: 'Super Load: A sub-permit of a Chapter 6 Special for Vehicles and/or Loads as referenced in § 42-4-510 (1.7) (a) (I) and (II).' Escorts & markings
- Pilot cars / escorts
- Pilot escort requirements depend on width and on the colour coding of the route on CDOT's Pilot Escort and Oversize Restriction Map. Daylight, blue route: over 8 ft 6 in to 11 ft wide, one front pilot; over 11 ft to 13 ft, one front and one rear; over 13 ft, Chapter 6 Special. Yellow route: over 11 ft to 13 ft, one front; over 13 ft to 15 ft, one front plus either a rear pilot or one flashing yellow light; over 15 ft, Chapter 6 Special. Green route: over 13 ft to 15 ft, one front on two-lane or a rear pilot/flashing yellow light on four-lane; over 15 ft to 17 ft, one front plus rear pilot or flashing yellow light on two-lane, or rear pilot or flashing yellow light on four-lane; over 17 ft, Chapter 6 Special. White route: over 15 ft to 17 ft, rear pilot or flashing yellow light; over 17 ft, Chapter 6 Special. Red route: anything over 8 ft 6 in requires a Chapter 6 Special. Hours of darkness: over 12 ft to 14 ft wide needs one front pilot on two-lane and one rear pilot on four-lane; over 14 ft wide is prohibited at night without a Chapter 6 Special. By length: over 85 ft on mountainous two-lane (front), over 110 ft on non-mountainous two-lane (front), over 115 ft on four-lane (rear). Every Chapter 6 Special or Super Load needs at least one front and one rear pilot escort unless the Department expressly says otherwise.
IMPORTANT: Colorado's width escort thresholds are not a single statewide table - they vary by the colour assigned to each State Highway on CDOT's Pilot Escort and Oversize Restriction Map, which this record did not retrieve. The route colour must be looked up before any width threshold above is applied. The length rule is 410: 'An Extra-legal Vehicle or Load which exceeds the following Maximum Limits for Length must use a Pilot Escort Vehicle: 410.1 More than eighty-five feet when traveling on Mountainous two-lane Highways, the Pilot Escort Vehicle must be positioned one in the front. 410.2 More than one hundred ten feet when traveling on all non-Mountainous two-lane Highways, the Pilot Escort Vehicle must be positioned in the front. 410.3 More than one hundred fifteen feet traveling on four-lane Highways, the Pilot Escort Vehicle must be positioned in the rear.'
