The short answer

A reclass means the carrier changed the classification used to rate your shipment after it was picked up, because what it measured did not match what you tendered. The new class changes the price.

Do these first

Compare the carrier's verified shipment data with what you originally tendered.

  • Ask for the inspection details — weight, dimensions and classification basis.
  • Pull the original BOL — compare the tendered commodity, weight, dimensions and NMFC item.
  • Keep your measurement records — photos, scale tickets or shipping-system data can support a billing review.

What changed in a reclass

A carrier may determine that the class on the shipment should differ from what was tendered because the actual shipment data or NMFC application differs.

Estes, for example, states that invoices may change based on certified-scale reweighs, shipment-dimensioner results or NMFC class standards.

The 2025 NMFC change matters

The major NMFC changes took effect July 19, 2025.

NMFTA says:

  • The prior 11-sub full-density scale expanded to 13 subprovisions.
  • More than 2,000 items moved toward full-scale density-based classification.
  • Handling, stowability and liability still matter for items with those concerns.

Density therefore matters more often now, but density alone is not a universal class lookup.

How to reduce future reclasses

Send:

  • Actual finished weight
  • Greatest finished dimensions
  • Accurate commodity description
  • Correct NMFC item where applicable
  • Stackability and unusual handling information
